Description

Primary Purpose:

Assist the transportation department in providing safe and dependable student and staff transportation through a fleet of clean and well-maintained automobiles, trucks, and busses.

 

Qualifications:

 

            Education/Certification:

            High school diploma, equivalency

            Valid Texas Commercial Driver’s license (Class B with P & S endorsement)

            CPR and First Aide certification, preferred

            Texas bus driver certification

            Texas Inspection Certification, preferred

 

            Special Knowledge/Skills:

            Ability to pass drug and alcohol test

            Ability to complete required bus driver safety training

            Acceptable driving record

            Ability to operate a bus

            Proficient computer skills or basic knowledge of computer programs

            Ability to accurately enter written data onto forms

            Ability to follow verbal and written instructions

            Minimum two years of general experience in service station type automotive maintenance, plus one year related

               experience on buses, trucks, or other heavy duty vehicular equipment.

 

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

 

  1. Perform “A” (lube oil filter), “B” (brake inspection), “C” (chasis), “D” (transmission service) level preventative maintenance on district vehicles.
  2. Assist technicians in overhaul, rebuilding, and replacing major assemblies and components.
  3. Lubricate buses and other automotive equipment to include chassis lube, oil and filter changes, gearbox fill or drain and flush, wheel bearing pack and all other lubricating and air cleaner service procedures, as required.
  4. Verify operational safety of equipment and devices, such as brakes, clutch, lamps, mirrors, glass, fire extinguishers, first aid kits, highway warning kits, horn, warning lamps and buzzers, emergency exists, wipers, signs, tires, etc.
  5. Make assigned vehicle repairs with appropriate instruction and guidance.
  6. Complete the required written documentation (repair orders, vehicle condition reports, etc.).
  7. Participate in assigned shop and facility clean up and preservation activities (responsible for seat repair, etc.). Assist in maintaining parts room is kept clean and orderly.
  8. Check daily fuel amounts and record information daily.
  9. Maintains own toolbox.
  10. Responsible for checking and maintaining fluids on all district vehicles.
  11. Change and repair tires, perform complete battery service and brake adjustments.
  12. Install antifreeze and service cooling systems, inspect and replace hoses, cap valves, etc.
  13. Make minor repairs by replacing lamps, spark plugs, ignition parts, patches and switches as required.
  14. Operate lubrication equipment, hoist, compressor, battery charger, diagnostic equipment, headlight adjustment machine, alignment board, spark plug tester, drills, presses, air wrenches and other tools and equipment, as required in the performance of assigned duties.
  15. Drive service truck for roadside service, as required.
  16. Drive bus route as needed.
  17. Maintains confidentiality of information.
  18. Exemplifies high standards of ethical conduct according to District Policy.
  19. Displays tolerance necessary for accepting supervision for criticism of duty performance.
  20. Works in harmony with supervisory and peer personnel.
  21. Is task-focused and does not socialize excessively.
  22. Supports administrative policy.
  23. Is prompt at arriving at workstation at the beginning of each working day.
  24. Represents the school system to the community in a positive professional way.
  25. Maintains a sincere, friendly attitude toward visitors and patrons to insure communication.
  26. Executes other duties as assigned by director of transportation and foreman.

Equipment Used:

Antifreeze recycler, fueling system, air compressors, refrigerant recycler, parts washing vat, tire changer, grinder, bus washer, radio, video cameras, scan tools, steam cleaner, welding machine, torch, power tools, jacks, lift equipment, electronic analysis equipment, electrical test equipment, Canyon ISD vehicles, personal computer and associated software.

 

Working Conditions

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Modern shop conditions.  Subject to frequent interruptions; inclement weather conditions; continual walking, standing; frequent heavy lifting and carrying; climbing, stooping, bending, kneeling, and reaching; operation of power and hand tools; exposure to extreme temperatures, dust, fumes, and odors.  Exposure to mechanical, electrical, and chemical hazards.  Work around moving objects and vehicles.  Work on ladders up to 10 feet high.
